Steelcraft is an outdoor, family friendly, food focused shipping container mall and hangout which is located in Bixby Knolls, CA at the southeast corner of Bixby Road and Long Beach Boulevard. The grand opening was held in February 2017, which included a ribbon cutting ceremony with the mayor. The modified repurposed and new shipping containers for this spectacular modular construction project were supplied by IPME creating a modern and unique atmosphere. The project includes shipping container restaurants, a shipping container coffee shop and shipping container bar as well as shipping container bathrooms. With 10 shipping containers co-owner of Steelcraft Kim Gros has created an amazing venue and courtyard for all of Long Beach and surrounding area to enjoy. What impact does this project have on America?
This project directly affects America by bringing a new family friendly venue to enjoy to a community through the use of green recycled materials (shipping containers). IPME’s goal is to continue to inspire the rest of America to think eco friendly and continue to make an environmental impact through the use of shipping containers as modular building blocks. It also fits the community perfectly being 5 minutes from the fourth biggest shipping port in the world (Long Beach, CA).
What interesting obstacles or unusual circumstances did you overcome to complete the project?
Utilizing shipping containers as permanent structures in certain cities can be at times be an obstacle. IPME’s experience using shipping containers for projects like the Waldorf High School in Orange County and Jacks Garage in Huntington Beach amongst helped assist in overcoming these obstacles and getting it through the city.
What dangers and risks did you encounter, and describe any extraordinary methods used to keep workers safe?
Safety is always a concern on any construction project. IPME follows strict protocol both in our warehouse, as the containers go down the road and onsite at a project to complete projects in the safest means possible.
How did you leverage new technologies to work faster and reduce waste?
We reduced waste by using recycled shipping containers as our structures for this amazing project. This eliminated the use of many building materials that were not recycled and would have caused waste. The use of containers also sped up the construction immensely because as the structures were being built the grounds of the project were being prepared simultaneously.
