ODOT project 167023 LOR-303 -14.09
Located in a rural setting along the Black River, on State Route 303 in Lorain County, Ohio - the project consisted of repairing a failing embankment, utilizing soil nails with a shotcrete face, along with the placement of rock channel protection. Due to the localized erosion caused by the fluctuating waters of the East Branch Black River, a large amount of scour had caused the embankment to fail. Due to the emergency situation, project had to be completed within 30 days.
What impact does this project have on America?
The road failure was impeding residents and business through traffic - Eclipse Company repaired the slide within the deadline and traffic was maintained. Eclipse had limited natural resources to work with on site, so we utilized recycled concrete from a nearby job to satisfy the emergency project material requirements while at the same time, being green and reusing discarded materials.
What interesting obstacles or unusual circumstances did you overcome to complete the project?
Ohio winter weather between project start in November to completion in December, along with working on edge of rushing riverbank and the traveling public.
What dangers and risks did you encounter, and describe any extraordinary methods used to keep workers safe?
Working on the riverbank with fluctuating winter water levels and bitter temperatures - workers were kept from danger by our strict on the job safety measures.
How did you leverage new technologies to work faster and reduce waste?
Eclipse used soil nailing - which is a process used to bring stability to dirt/soil in any area where landslides could occur, which is common on riverbank projects. Eclipse had limited natural resources to work with on site, so we utilized recycled concrete from a nearby job to satisfy the emergency project material requirements while at the same time, being green and reusing discarded materials.
