The work generally consists of the installation of a six mile long Class I bicycle and pedestrian path in the County of Napa from California Drive in the Town of Yountville to Redwood Road in the City of Napa. The majority of the path runs between the Napa Valley Wine Train right-of-way and the existing flood control channels along the project corridor. This mixed-use facility consists primarily of a 10′ wide asphalt concrete path with 2′ shoulders, two bridges at Hinman Creek Collector, the expansion of the Solano Avenue bridge over Dry Creek, that is completely separate from vehicular traffic along Solano Avenue. , installation of 2 new traffic signals, modification on an existing traffic signal, signage and striping, retaining walls, fencing, biological mitigation, tree removal, landscaping and irrigation. Existing drainage features and patterns will remain along the extent of the project.
What impact does this project have on America?
This segment of the Vine Trail increases the bicycle and pedestrian access in wine country. This 6 mile project is one segment of a larger overall project to create safe access for pedestrians and cyclists in Napa Valley. Local residents and tourists alike use the trail. This project also increases safety at the three main intersections on HWY 29 in Napa, including the Wine Train crossings at those intersections.
What interesting obstacles or unusual circumstances did you overcome to complete the project?
Many challenges have been overcome to enhance public enjoyment as there is Caltrans oversight, Napa Valley Transportation Authority administering the contract, and the Town of Yountville, County of Napa, City of Napa, and Vine Trail coalition all being stakeholders in the project. There are a lot of cooks in this kitchen.
There have been many survey issues since the 2014 Napa earthquake occurred after the site was surveyed for the plans. Gutter flow lines and sidewalk elevations have also been obstacles that were overcome.
What dangers and risks did you encounter, and describe any extraordinary methods used to keep workers safe?
Work near rail road tracks and highway 29 presented safety issues. Though there we no extraordinary methods used to keep workers safe there is a demand for proper safety measures to be implemented without fail.
How did you leverage new technologies to work faster and reduce waste?
The job was bid to export 14,000 CY of soil. With careful survey and balancing calculations we managed to keep the all of the spoils on site thereby reducing trucking emissions.
