Widening of the existing connector to accommodate traffic flow into Dallas.
What impact does this project have on America?
This project has greatly reduced traffic congestion moving into Dallas as it is a major trucking route.
What interesting obstacles or unusual circumstances did you overcome to complete the project?
Because of the age of the existing bridge state engineers as well as many others were not aware of the impact of tying a new modern structure into an outdated existing structure. The result of this required complete removal of the old bridge deck, without damaging the structural portion of the bridge, then tying the two together. All while maintaining traffic flow on the new built portion of the bridge.
What dangers and risks did you encounter, and describe any extraordinary methods used to keep workers safe?
As always, road and exit closures are a danger in themselves. The use of a multitude of traffic control devices had to be used as well as up to 10 law enforcement officers on any given closure. The height of the bridge with traffic continually moving under in ALL directions was a challenge in itself, no accidents or damage to vehicles incurred due to the diligence of my men to work safely.
How did you leverage new technologies to work faster and reduce waste?
Other than super hardening polymer cements, no real new technologies were use. Just good old fashioned bridge construction.
