Tex Wash flows storm/rain run off under I-10 in the desert approx. 50 east of Indio, ca. There was heavy rain causing flooding under the bridge at Tex Wash undermining the abutment and 1/3 of the bridge collapsed closing down East bound I-10. Granite Construction was awarded a contract to repair damages. We installed an east bound cross over to allow traffic to flow while repairs were being done. We had minor repairs on 3 additional bridges, installed amor (bolders) along the face of Tex Wash at the abutment and rebuilt the east bound bridge from July 20th to Sept. 24. This was completed with over 20,000 Man hours and no injuries. Completion of this project allowed for east bound I-10 to be re opened with 2 east bound lanes.

What interesting obstacles or unusual circumstances did you overcome to complete the project?
Precast abuments, Extreme temps., Over all lagisticts of the project, being over an hour from any support, equipment and materials. Our dead line to complete the project; from demo to reconstruct the new bridge.
What dangers and risks did you encounter, and describe any extraordinary methods used to keep workers safe?
With the fast paced completion of the job, exhaustion was one of the biggest risks the crews faced. We doubled up on crews and put what rescources were needed to avoid any employee from getting to that point. The Construction Manager, Project Manager, Superintendent and Safety Manager took different shift and or time to spend on site talking and checking on employees as well. High temp were also a risk on the job, Keeping plenty of cool water and shade along with an on site office with A/C was important to allow employee cool rest periods.
How did you leverage new technologies to work faster and reduce waste?
We used precast abutment and box gerders to help complete the construction of the bridge an a faster time.
